hungry at the time and would have starved to death if he had not stolen the bread.
if he had not stolen the bread.
Since the old man confessed, the judge ordered the man to pay ten dollars in damages and then told him that since he knew the convict could not pay this money, he would pay for it himself,
he would pay it himself.
There was dead silence in the courtroom, and the judge took ten dollars out of his pocket and asked
the court aide to deliver the money to the court treasury.
Then the judge stood up and spoke to everyone in the courtroom:
"I find each and every one of you guilty, everyone present in this courtroom, must pay a fine
of ten dollars, because you, as citizens of such a wealthy town, have refused to help a starving old man, so that he had to steal bread because of
hunger had to steal bread."
In the courtroom, $480 was collected and the judge gave the
Money to the old man.
The judge also added the following statement:
"If in a wealthy
city, where supposedly civilized citizens live, sees destitute people, it should be clear to one that the
people in power are stealing from their own people."
